Why Travel Insurance Matters

Anything Can Happen — and Sometimes It Does

Travel is one of life's great joys. But overseas medical costs, cancelled flights, lost luggage and unexpected emergencies are a reality — and without insurance, they can be financially devastating.

Overseas Medical Emergencies

A simple broken leg or appendicitis in the USA can generate a hospital bill that would make your eyes water. The US has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia — you're on your own without insurance.

US hospital stays can exceed $10,000 per night

Flight Cancellations & Delays

Airlines cancel and delay flights. When yours goes wrong, the cascading costs — hotels, new flights, missed pre-paid activities — add up fast. Insurance means you're not footing that bill alone.

Average disruption claim: $1,200–$3,500

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Luggage

Airlines lose over 6 million bags every year worldwide. If yours is one of them, the airline's compensation is often far less than the actual value of what you've lost. Insurance bridges that gap.

Airline liability typically capped at ~$1,800 AUD

Having to Cancel Before You Go

A family emergency, sudden illness or unexpected job loss can force you to cancel a trip you've already paid for. Without cancellation cover, those non-refundable costs — flights, hotels, tours — are gone.

Average trip cancellation claim: $4,000–$12,000

Common Questions

Travel Insurance FAQs

The questions Aussies ask us most before buying travel insurance — answered honestly and in plain English.

When should I buy travel insurance?
As soon as you book your trip — not the day before you fly. Buying early protects you against cancellation events that might occur before you even depart, like illness, injury or a family emergency. If something happens after you've booked but before you've bought insurance, you could miss out on a cancellation claim.
Am I covered if my flight gets cancelled by the airline?
Travel insurance typically covers the cascading costs of a cancelled flight — additional accommodation, meals, rebooking fees — rather than the airline refund itself (that's the airline's responsibility). Cover-More plans include travel delay benefits that kick in when your journey is disrupted. Always check your PDS for specifics.
Does it cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Some pre-existing conditions are automatically covered, others may require an assessment and potentially an additional premium. It's important to declare all conditions when you apply. Don't assume you're covered — be upfront, because failing to disclose a condition can affect your claim. Call us on 1800 242 373 if you're unsure.
Can I buy insurance after I've already left Australia?
Yes, but there's an important catch — if you've already left home, there's a 3-day no-cover period from when you purchase the policy. This means no cover for any event that has already occurred or arises within the first 3 days. It's always better to buy before you travel.
Is there COVID-19 cover?
Cover-More plans include limited COVID-19 cover on some plans. Sub-limits and conditions apply, and there's no cover for travel to destinations under a 'Do Not Travel' advisory or where government-imposed border closures are in place. Check the PDS for full COVID-19 terms before purchasing.
What's the difference between single trip and annual multi-trip?
A single trip policy covers one specific journey from the date you leave home to the date you return. An annual multi-trip policy covers unlimited trips throughout the year (up to a set number of days per trip — typically 90 days). If you travel more than twice a year, annual multi-trip is almost always better value.
