Car rental prices increase as availability drops, especially during peak school holidays and summer. Book as soon as your flights are confirmed — you can often amend or cancel for free if plans change.

Understand Your Excess
Almost every rental comes with an excess — the amount you're liable for if the car is damaged. This can be $3,000–$5,000+ in some countries. Consider excess reduction insurance to bring this down to zero.

Check the Fuel Policy
Most rentals use a "full-to-full" fuel policy — you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. Some offer "full-to-empty" which sounds good but can be pricey. Always check before you book.

You'll Need a Credit Card at Pick-Up
Almost all rental companies require a credit card (not debit) to place a hold for the excess amount at pick-up. Make sure your card has sufficient available credit before you travel.

What documents do I need to pick up my hire car?
You'll need your valid Australian driver's licence, the rental voucher or booking confirmation, and a credit card in the main driver's name with sufficient available credit for the excess hold. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit — check the requirements for your specific destination.
Can I add an additional driver?
Yes — most suppliers allow additional drivers, though there's often a daily fee. All drivers must be present at pick-up with their licence. Some suppliers include a spouse or domestic partner as a free additional driver — check your specific booking for details.
What is excess reduction and do I need it?
Excess reduction (also called a Collision Damage Waiver or CDW top-up) reduces your financial liability if the car is damaged. Without it, you could be liable for thousands of dollars. It's not mandatory but we strongly recommend considering it, especially in countries where repair costs are high.
Can I pick up the car at the airport?
Absolutely — airport pickup is one of the most popular options. Most major international airports have rental counters for all major suppliers. Just be aware that airport locations sometimes attract an airport surcharge on top of the base rental price, which is included in the total shown when you search.
What if I want to drive across a border?
Cross-border travel is allowed in many regions but you must advise the supplier at the time of booking — not after.
